Indonesia is preparing a major solar energy programme worth an estimated USD 71.3 billion as it looks to accelerate its clean energy transition.
The country is planning to develop around 100 GW of solar power capacity, supported by large-scale battery energy storage systems.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning have identified around 24,000 hectares of land on Java Island for the programme.
The government will also assess transmission lines, substations and other grid infrastructure needed to connect the planned solar projects.
First Phase To Focus On 17 GW
Indonesia will initially prioritise the development of 17 GW of solar capacity under the wider 100 GW plan.
The programme will also include battery energy storage systems of around 33 GW.
The full programme is expected to cover about 100.7 GWp of solar capacity and 145.8 GWh of battery storage.
Of this, large-scale grid-connected solar projects will account for around 87.5 GWp, supported by 111 GWh of storage. Distributed solar projects for remote areas and villages are expected to add 13.2 GWp, backed by 34.8 GWh of storage.
Tariffs And Investment
The government estimates tariffs for large solar projects at 5.5 to 25 US cents per kWh. Small-scale solar tariffs are expected to range from 9 to 40 US cents per kWh, depending on storage capacity.
The overall programme is estimated to require investment of about USD 71.3 billion.
Ambitious 2026-2028 Target
President Prabowo Subianto has set a target to add 100 GW of solar capacity between 2026 and 2028.
The goal is ambitious, as Indonesia currently has only around 1.5 GW of installed solar capacity. If implemented, the programme could sharply expand the country’s renewable energy base and strengthen solar power’s role in its electricity mix.
